'Fist of Physics' Feels Like The Natural Evolution Of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

Every now and then you come across a VR game that marries two things that you never really knew you wanted to see wed in holy gaming matrimony. But if you took the concept of boxing, such as in the excellent Thrill of the Fight, and had that game shack up with giant mech robots rampaging through a city, then you’d have a pretty close approximation of Fist of Physics by Midas Touch Games.

Honestly, it feels like the most natural evolution of the classic Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots toys of your youth.

Fist of Physics’ robot-punching antics are currently in Early Access, but it packs enough power already at this early stage to garner our attention. You’ll be stationed in a bright, whimsical version of San Francisco as you’re charged with battling against enormous mechanized baddies that are set on leveling your wondrous town unless you sock ’em right in the face.

As the name suggests though, second only in prominence to your primary weapons of mass destruction (your fists) are the fantastic physics on display. Each and every robot chunk, metal scrap, and former limb goes flying off with satisfying impact when you make contact. Without providing real resistance on hits, the game does an admirable job of mimicking what it would feel like to actually fight a giant robot.

All of the different enemies will try to surprise you and catch you off guard with their own unique sets of abilities, so it doesn’t get too repetitive, even though it is a relatively simplistic game. Right now, there is only a single map with three robot enemies and four total weapons. At the very least, perhaps it can be added into your rotation of calorie-burning VR experiences.

The road map beyond Early Access includes plans to double the number of enemies to six, adding in leaderboards, more maps, and of course more weapons. The price is intended to increase once the game leaves Early Access in approximately four months.

We know the upcoming Power Rangers movie is getting a Zord VR experience and with a bit of luck, maybe it will be half as fun as the fighting found in Fist of Physics. You can download the game on Steam for $9.99 with official support for HTC Vive.
