'Lethal VR' Is A New VR FPS From The Makers Of 'Black' and 'Burnout'

Black from Criterion Games was one of the most visceral and fun shooters of the PlayStation 2 generation, and some of the creative talent behind it are now working on a new first-person shooter for the VR generation.

Lethal VR is the latest title from Three Fields Entertainment, an indie developer made up of former members of Criterion. Published by Team17 (yes, the guys that made Worms, they publish stuff too), the game lets you step into the shoes of an FBI agent in an arcade-inspired shooter that pays homage to some classic action movies. Using position-tracked controls you’ll wield a variety of guns and other types of weapons to knock down targets.

Movie references include weapons and scenes from Magnum Force, Point Break, Kill Bill and even Crocodile Dundee. There are also nods to James Bond movies like The Man With The Golden Gun and Goldfinger.

“These sequences, and many more like that, have always stayed with me, and I’ve always wanted to be able to try my luck on a shooting range like those shown in those movie clips,” Three Fields Creative Director, Alex Ward, wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “If you’ve always wanted to – we’re giving you that chance with Lethal VR.”

You’ll also get to throw ninja stars and shoot Western-style magnums across 31 different missions. It may not be Black 2, but we’re hoping that paying tribute to some great action movies will prove to be just as compelling.

The game is “built from the ground up” for the HTC Vive, where it will release on Nov. 8th, though it’s also due on PlayStation VR at a later date. An Oculus Rift version hasn’t been announced, but given it is coming to these platforms it’s not hard to imagine it arriving there once Oculus Touch launches in December.

Meanwhile, Criterion Games itself is also working in VR. The studio is developing the Star Wars: Rogue One X-Wing VR Mission that’s due to arrive on PlayStation VR as a free add-on for Star Wars: Battlefront owners later this year. Hopefully we’ll see more from that soon.
