The 'Star Wars Battlefront' PS VR Experience Will Be A Free 'Rogue One' Tie-In for Battlefront Owners

The 'Star Wars Battlefront' PS VR Experience Will Be A Free 'Rogue One' Tie-In for Battlefront Owners

In March, we reported that the upcoming PlayStation VR headset would be getting an exclusive Star Wars experience that would connect to the PlayStation 4’s existing Battlefront franchise of games. Since then it became clear that the experience would allow users to officially pilot an X-Wing for the first time in virtual reality, but exact details still remained sparse. Now, a new PlayStation blog has been published that provides new details as to the exact nature of the experience and also grants it an official name: Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing Mission.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a new film in the series that will release this December. It takes place in between episodes III and IV (or between the prequels and original trilogy,) which is also the similar time period that Star Wars Battlefront loosely covers. The PS VR X-Wing mission is being produced by Criterion Games (Burnout Revenge) and a producer from the studio, James Svensson, spoke to this shared timeline in an interview on the PlayStation blog.

Rogue One is in the same time period [Battlefront] covers, so to be relevant in the ever-evolving Star Wars universe we’ve since been able to work with Lucasfilm to make the connection here.”

The post also revealed some of the first gameplay details of the X-Wing experience. At least part of the game will task players with taking down one of Star Wars monolithic Star Destroyer class battleships.

“These things are huge and powerful with a belly full of TIE fighters. Being in a fight with a Star Destroyer is not a situation an X-Wing pilot wants to find themselves in, but that’s where the player ends up. The player will have to keep their wits about them, with intense battle ensuing from every direction, to keep them and their wingmen alive as they complete a critical mission for the Rebellion.”

According to Svensson, the X-Wing experience will be an extension of the base Battlefront game and will be completely free to people that have already made that purchase. They will, of course, be required to obtain a PS VR as well in order to access the content.

A final release date for Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X Wing Mission has not yet been confirmed. You can watch the original E3 video above.
