50 Days Of PS VR #14: 'Thumper' is a Deliciously Fast Mind-Bending Rhythm Game

50 Days Of PS VR #14: 'Thumper' is a Deliciously Fast Mind-Bending Rhythm Game

14 days (just two weeks!) to go until the launch of PlayStation VR! We’re counting down to the release of Sony’s VR headset on October 13th by highlighting one game a day for its anticipated release. Today we’re getting a little psychedelic with the face-meltingly fast rhythm game, Thumper.

When the game’s trailer (embedded below) describes itself as a “Rhythm Hell” experience then you know you’re in for quite a treat. It’s own website literally describes it as a “rhythm violence game,” so, you know, yeah.

Thumper, by DROOL, sort of defies genre descriptions as, at first glance, it appears to be some sort of trippy racing game. But upon playing it, you’ll find it’s actually more a rhythm game that has you turning, shifting lanes, and jumping your car to the beat, or “thump” in this case, of the music.

While the entire game is playable outside of VR on a standard PS4 and on Steam, it clearly excels at providing the most pulse-pounding and exhilarating experience while wearing the PS VR headset. When I last played Thumper, it was back at Sony’s GDC 2016 PS VR showcase. I had a great time, but I can absolutely contend that the colors, flashing, and intensity will certainly be a bit much for some people to handle.

Since this is far from an actual racing game, you’ll have to look elsewhere to the likes of DriveClub VR or Radial-G to get that fix. Herein lies music and lights powerful enough to rock any hardened gamer to the core.

Thumper releases with the PS VR headset on October 13th.
