Social VR Network AltspaceVR Is Now Available On Oculus Quest

Update: AltSpaceVR is now available on Oculus Quest as a free download.

Original Story On 9/3/19: Another social VR network, AltspaceVR, is set to arrive on Oculus Quest soon.

The app will launch on September 12. AltspaceVR itself confirmed the news over on Twitter last week. The experience had previously aimed to launch in August, though obviously it’s a little late for that.

No other details were provided, but we’d expect this to be the full version of the app. AltspaceVR already runs across the gamut of VR headsets, from HTC Vive right down to Oculus Go. Cross-play is supported in past editions, so we’d expect to see the same out of this version, though nothing’s confirmed as of yet. Again, like other versions, we’d also expect this edition to be free.

In AltspaceVR you can meet up with friends to hangout as if you were in the same room. Players create cartoonish avatars and explore different spaces and play games. The app also has a big focus on live events, hosting everything from standup comedy to live panels and Q&As.

Back in 2017 AltspaceVR announced it would be shutting down. Then, a few months later, Microsoft acquired the startup. On Quest, the app joins existing social apps like Rec Room. As with many games, Quest’s accessible standalone nature might help boost the total number of users on the platform, though we don’t have any such data for either the headset nor AltspaceVR itself.

Other Quest games currently on the horizon include Skyworld Kingdom Brawl and Real VR Fishing. What are you planning to pick up for your headset next?
