ANTVR Returns With a New Mobile Headset Made with OnePlus

Long-time VR fans will recall the infamous ANTVR HMD that passed a Kickstarter campaign two years ago now, raising over $260,000. This week, the company behind the kit is returning.

For those that missed it, ANTVR (pictured above) promised much. It was supposedly meant to turn any game on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One into a VR experience, complete with its own controller that could adapt to the type of experience you were playing. It even touted a unique one-step form of movement where players could place a foot in one direction to move that way in-game. Ultimately the kit seemingly launched to little fanfare and was met with disappointment from backers – as proved by VRBits.

You might have thought you’d heard the last from the company, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has in fact teamed up with the HMD maker to offer a brand new mobile device named the OnePlus Loop. You can see it below. It houses a handset in front of a pair of lenses just like any other mobile-based VR kit and sports the ANTVR branding on the side, much in the same way the Oculus logo can be seen on the side of the Gear VR from Samsung.

OnePlus has already given away 30,000 of the headsets for free which will ship out early next month. Why? To help promote its brand new phone, the OnePlus 3. Last year the company revealed its OnePlus 2 within VR itself and this year it’s creating a full VR environment in a fictional space station also named The Loop. Full details haven’t been disclosed just yet, but anyone that does visit this space will be able to order a OnePlus 3 before the rest of the world.

It’s unclear if any more OnePlus Loop units will be made now that the initial batch is gone. Personally, it’s just interesting to see that ANTVR is still up and running even after making bizarre promises like stating that it would have a VR version of Konami’s P.T. available when using ANTVR on PlayStation 4. It’s not even possible to buy that HMD anymore, so where the company goes from here is anyone’s guess.
