NOTE: This is an outdated post that has since been replaced. You can read the most current guide here, which is the article we will be updating moving forward. The following article is only posted here for archive and reference purposes, but is otherwise outdated.
(Update 6/18/19): Want to install custom songs on Oculus Quest? We’ve got you covered right here.
Update (4/10/19): We wrote a new guide specifically for getting mods working again after recent updates. Refer to this new guide for troubleshooting going forward.
Update (1/11/19): We added more context around the options you should select in the Mod Installer. We’ve also now got a guide on installing custom sabers.
Update (8/3/18): Recent patches have rendered the below method broken for a lot of people. However — don’t worry. There’s a fix out there spotted by our friends at RoadtoVR and it’s called the Beat Saber Mod Manager. If you’re new to adding custom songs to Beat Saber, then skip the original steps and just do these new ones. If you installed songs previously that aren’t working anymore, there’s an optional step here you can follow.
Here are the steps:
- Download the latest version of BeatSaberModInstaller.exe (1.9 at the time of writing).
- (Optional) If you installed custom songs prior to v0.11.0, open the Beat Saber directory and rename the ‘Plugins’ folder to ‘PluginsOLD’.
- With the game closed, launch the .exe, confirm that the game’s directory is correctly selected, then install the core mods (the ones checked by default, select extras if you wish). [the .exe may trigger a warning from Windows when you run it]
- Make sure you select “Song Loader Plugin” at the very least.
- Additionally, If you want to be able to download music from inside the game, select “BeatSaver Downloader.”
- Now either jump into the game and find songs with the new options, or download them manually from the Beat Saver website and put them into the corresponding “CustomSongs” folder.
I’ve tested it and I can confirm that not only does it work, but you’ll now also be able to download songs directly inside of Beat Saber without needing to restart the game or extract tracks into the game’s folder.
Original (5/18/18): While we patiently wait for official (and free) DLC, the alpha version of Beat Saber’s level editor will have to do for now. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to download and import tracks that users have created for the time being, even if it’s not officially supported.
We livestreamed a bunch of custom-made songs for an hour yesterday, so you can check that video out down below (I specifically recommend Take On Me, which you can see me complete on Expert after three tries at 53:48) –
Getting Beat Saber to work with custom songs is simple:
- Download this plugin from GitHub.
- Unzip the contents directly into your Beat Saber folder. If you’re playing on Steam then it’s probably under \steamapps\common\Beat Saber\ in your director, or if you’re on Oculus Home it’s likely under \Oculus Apps\Software\hyperbolic-magnetism-beat-saber\.
- Drag the Saber.exe file ontop of the IPA.exe file and drop it. This will initialize the plugin. Leave everything else the way it is.
If you get stuck, there is a handy-dandy ReadMe file in the .zip you’re supposed to download from step one, so just check that.
Now to actually install new tracks, you need to visit Beat Saver, which is a community-ran website with tons of songs ready to download. Be warned that many of these tracks don’t fit the game well or have really poor mapping. Sorting them by most played or most downloaded helps filter out the stinkers.
Once you download a song just drag and drop its entire folder into the CustomSongs folder that should be in your Beat Saber directory now. From there, you should be good to go!
