Bebylon Battle Royale Dev Scores Unreal Dev Grant

Bebylon Battle Royale developer Kite & Lightning is one of a long list of teams awarded funding in the latest round of Epic Games’ Unreal Dev Grants.

The team, which made its name with free VR experiences like Senza Peso, was given an undisclosed portion of over $200,000 that Epic handed out to developers. This is no strings attached funding that is awarded to independent teams using Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 to build their projects. Past recipients include VR developers like Polyarc, the creators of upcoming PSVR game, Moss. Other recipients of this round include non-VR projects like Hyper Jam and Claybook.

Bebylon is set to be Kite & Lightning’s first full VR game. It’s a multiplayer title in which players control deformed Bebies, humans that haven’t physically aged and now occupy their own planet in which they battle it out for supremacy. It’s quite a departure from the team’s previous work, to say the least.

For an independent, two-man studio that hasn’t yet released a commerical VR product, funding like this is no doubt essential for Kite & Lightning.

We’ve been following the developer quite closely of late as it uses Apple’s iPhone X as an affordable form of facial animation tool. The game, meanwhile, is hopefully launching late this year on Rift and Vive. As for Epic Games, you can expect updates from the company’s work with Unreal Engine 4 at the 2018 Game Developers Conference, which is just under two months away.
