When I first heard that Baptiste & Bottle would be serving a new cocktail in a Gear VR I thought that sounded like a waste of an expensive headset with no water proof components. Then I realized how stupid I was being and how cool an idea this really is.
This Chicago-based bar and restaurant is known for its ambitious and unusual menu in which nothing is too elaborate. That’s certainly true of its latest invention, The Macallan Rare Journey, revealed by Forbes. This isn’t just a singular cocktail but an entire experience in which guests put on a Gear and are taken on a visual journey to complement the tastes and smells they’ll already be experiencing.
The experience was recreated with the help of Raquel Raies of The Macallan brand. It consists of Bodegas Tradicion 30 year Oloroso Sherry and The Macallan Rare Cask, made using the top 1% of casks at The Macallan distillery. Inside VR, guests will see the story of the drink with a tour of Macallan’s site and the various components that come together to make everything possible.
If it all sounds a little too up market then that’s because it kind of is; the cocktail is $95 and the bar is based in the Conrad Chicago luxury hotel. One of those and you could very nearly afford a Gear VR itself. Then you can drink pretty much whatever you want with it (though we’d really recommend taking the headset off before sipping anything).
