Hello everybody! It’s been awhile since we did a Community Download. The wonderful human that used to write them every weekend, Joe Durbin, is no longer working at UploadVR so we decided to let the series take a rest out of respect *pours one out.*
But now we’re back and ready to stir up some important, thought-provoking, and potentially jimmy-rustling conversation around the VR, AR, and game industries that we love so much. We’ve covered a lot of topics over the past year in Community Download and this week we thought it made sense to focus on the undisputed leader in VR hardware sales: the Samsung Gear VR.
It’s been around for years between its various dev kits, the Innovator Edition, and now multiple iterations of the consumer product. The visuals have improved, phone power has improved, and its even gotten its very own motion controller now as well. We’ve gone on record as dubbing the Gear VR + motion controller + Samsung Galaxy S8 as the best mobile VR experience you can possibly have right now. Period.
But that being said, it feels like most of the best VR experiences are on PlayStation VR (PSVR,) Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. Game consoles and PCs power those devices, so it makes since that they’d be better. Even still the Gear VR has quietly amassed a wonderful library of its very own and solid games are still coming out. In fact, Coatsink’s Augmented Empire is set to release just later this month.
Despite it all though, it feels like the Gear VR often is forgotten. So as a result, we want to know: Do you still use your Gear VR at all? When was the last time you used it? If someone broke in and stole it from your home, would you notice? And if so, would you even miss it?
