Koei Tecmo has already been scared out of releasing Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 in the west. Judging by the first images of the game’s VR support, it may well have dodged a bullet.
Japanese site Famitsu has the first images and video of the upcoming beach volleyball spin-off’s PlayStation VR integration. In the past, Dead Or Alive‘s Xtreme spin-off has caught flak for… well essentially being a game all about leering at women as they enjoy themselves on the beach. At least the main game has some mechanical systems for its players to defend it with, but the PS VR support seemingly throws all of that out of the window in favor of simply gawking at females and how little they’re wearing.

Okay, sorry, there do seem to be some mechanics at play; you can use the DualShock 4’s position-tracked controls to prod at the women who will apparently jump and squeal in reaction. I know it’s easy to look at something like this and say “Well, Japan” but it’s still surprising to see this all on PlayStation VR. There’s obviously a difference in perception between cultures, but it’ll be interesting to see if the mere existence of this type of content creates controversy for Sony over here, especially considering that anyone that really wants to get their hands on the game can probably import it.
In terms of what Japan is doing with VR though, this is actually pretty tame. VR developers within the country have started hosting VR porn festivals, featuring blow up dolls and machines that try to, uh, pleasure you. These events are popular, too; the first was closed after so many people tried to attend.
Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 will be a launch game for PlayStation VR in Japan, but don’t hold your breath on getting it over here.
