It was almost a year ago now that Oculus Story Studio’s animated short, Henry, won VR its first Emmy, not that it did the little critter any good. The nominations for this year’s awards have just been revealed though, and there are plenty more VR experiences recognized.
A total of six VR projects are getting nods this year. Three are in the Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media Within A Scripted Program category. One of those is the VR experience based on Netflix’s hit TV series, Stranger Things (watch here), another is the VR experience that ties-into the Amazon TV series, Mr. Robot (watch here). Finally there’s The Simpsons: Planet of the Couches (watch here).
The other experiences are in the Outstanding Original Interactive Program category, and they’re all made by or in collaboration with Oculus itself. One is Story Studio’s last project, Dear Angelica (download here for Rift), which was easily its best and most memorable piece. Then there’s Mission: ISS, a space-set experience developed by Magnopus (download here for Rift). Finally, we have The People’s House – Inside The White House With Barack And Michelle Obama (download here for Rift), a piece that made headlines for featuring the former President in 360 degrees.
That’s a decent selection of the VR experiences we’ve seen in the past year. It’s encouraging to see this type of content be so quickly welcomed by prestigious ceremonies such as this.
The Emmy Awards take place on September 17th at 5PM PT. We’ll be sure to tune in and see which VR experiences take away some awards.
