When Oculus Story Studio shut its doors earlier this year it meant the end of original animated storytelling from a first-party Oculus Studio. It also meant that the team’s brilliant creation app, Quill, wouldn’t get any more updates. At least, that’s what Oculus told us at the time.
Imagine our surprise, then, to find that Quill just got a big new update, adding plenty of new features. A Facebook post from the app states that the team behind it is “beyond excited” to release a new update. It largely focuses on user interface and performance improvements. We’ve got the full release notes below.
The post also featured a new video from VR artist Goro Fujita, which we’re including because it’s really excellent.
It sounds like this won’t be the last we hear from Quill, either, as the post promises more updates in the future. Quill was originally used by Story Studio itself to build Dear Angelica, its final piece. When it was revealed in early 2016 Oculus said that it had no plans to actually release it to the public. That obviously changed, although the company’s Medium VR sculpting tool is still arguably its primary creation platform.
We are beyond excited to announce that Quill just released an exciting new update on the Oculus store.
We strive to make the Quill user experience as intuitive and efficient as possible, so this update includes a lot of UX and performance improvements. The Gallery has four new featured Quillustrations for you to enjoy. The 360 mono and stereo image import will enable artists to bring in 360 images that could be used as matte paintings. With 3D sound support, you can now spacialize audio by placing the sound sources in 3D space as regular wave or ambisonic sound files. The colorizer has a new opacity mode with which you can change the opacity of existing strokes. More updates coming soon!
