Doom VFR Features Retro Maps From The Original Game

One of the original first-person shooter (FPS) games is coming back to VR for real.

Doom VFR launches this Friday on PlayStation VR (PSVR) and HTC Vive, remixing enemies and areas from the 2016 reboot with all-new content. The game’s set to offer a full campaign that uses position-tracked controllers like the Vive wands or PlayStation Moves to give players realistic gun control. But the game also tips its hat to the very first Doom, released all the way back in 1993.

IGN reports that Doom VFR will feature two bonus levels taken from the classic game: Toxic Refinery and Nuclear Plant. Both feature the exact same layouts and item placement as they did in the original version, with enemies from VFR replacing the classic foes. It’s not clear what you’ll have to do to unlock these levels — if anything — but it will definitely be endearing to see them brought back to life inside VR. Check out some gameplay below.

It looks like VR has finally come full circle.

Of course, we’re more excited to see how the entire game shapes up. We’ll be bringing you full impressions as soon as we get our hands on it.
