'Driveclub VR' Finally Detailed With New Features and Beautiful Screenshots on PS VR

Racing games and VR go together like puzzle games and mobile devices — they just make sense. Last month, we reported on the leak that Driveclub VR was real and was definitely coming to Japanese PS VR gamers at launch. However, what we didn’t officially know, is whether or not it would also be available at launch for other regions. Luckily today, the mystery was solved.

Through an official PlayStation Blog post by Nico Orru, Principal Programmer at SIE Immersive Technology Group, Driveclub VR is definitely coming exclusively for PS VR this year. The blog post is unclear whether or not that means on launch date or not.

Interestingly, it appears that SIE Immersive Technology Group have taken over development of the title following the closure of Evolution Studios, the original creators of the game. SIE is a bit of a mystery though, as finding game credits for them is a bit difficult online. They appear to have been around since 2014, so fans are positing that they could just be an internal sub-group within Sony’s Liverpool R&D team.

According to Orru, Driveclub VR comes packed with a whole host of features, including:

  • Game modes: Online virtual reality multiplayer race modes and an action-packed single player career are joined by drifting and time trial challenges.
  • Tracks: New and classic Driveclub tracks are brought to life through the power of PlayStation VR, including five all-new Urban locations.
  • Cars: More than 80 cars are recreated with immaculate detail for players to explore up close with Inspection Mode.
  • Cruise control: A little time to kick back, open the throttle or just coast and explore any track, in any country at your leisure in Cruise Mode.
  • Virtual passenger: An immersive thrill ride through exciting replays of hot laps as players watch themselves handle their greatest challenges from a unique viewpoint in Passenger Mode.

Of the detailed features, Cruise Control and the Passenger Mode both sound really nice. With how lush and detailed the environments are looking, I relish the thought of enjoying a ride through some beautiful countrysides. You can also get a closer look at the game with the new screenshots provided below.

Which PS VR racing title are you more excited for: Driveclub VR or Gran Turismo Sport?
