Google is bringing about a mobile VR revolution with its Daydream platform, but the team at Make is doing something far more important with Google Cardboard.
For his latest video, Make’s Caleb Kraft has created an edible edition of the mobile-based HMD. Yes, a Cardboard unit that is entirely made out of food, save for the lenses. It’s pieced together with Graham Crackers and held in place with dried icing. Once assembled and solid the design does indeed support a smartphone that slots in at the top. We’re not sure it comes under the official “Works with Google Cardboard” banner, but we’d like to think it does. And if you don’t believe it can be done, Kraft eats his way through the bulky kit at the end.
If you want to make your own tasty VR set then Make has some do’s and don’ts listed on its official website. It’s best to pay attention, otherwise your creation might end up like attempt one; a crumpled mess. We can’t help but wonder what other food might be good for VR HMDs? I’m envisioning a full English HMD consisting of fried bread and held together with bean sauce. Or perhaps the VR burger: two buns with a giant patty that’s got space for lenses. Maybe skip the cheese on that one.
That said, something makes me doubt that the Google Cracker (Google Graham?) provides the best quality VR experience. Cardboard itself can often be a sub-par experience, and I don’t think pouring on some sugar is going to make too much difference, though it definitely earns points for form factor. The Oculus Rift might have a wonderfully smooth finish, but what good is that when you’re hungry?
Palmer Luckey might say that bad VR will poison the well for everyone, but we’re willing to make exceptions if it happens to be delicious VR too. Just don’t use it near any ant hills.
