You might think you’ve seen all there is to EVE: Valkyrie [Review: 9/10] by now, but CCP Games’ next update will ensure that there’s always something new to explore.
Releasing on February 15th is the Wormholes Update, adding a new mode to the multiplayer space combat game. Wormholes isn’t exactly a new game type like the matches that have been added in the past, however. Instead, it’s a system for special events that players at Rank 5 and above can take part in.
One Wormhole will be open at a time and last for a short period (the first will be up for a few days). Inside, you’ll find a twisted version of a map from the standard game with match types that have been modified beyond the usual rules. The idea is to give you alternative takes on game modes that can change things up by forcing you to use a particular weapon or play in a certain way.
These events aren’t going to alter player’s stats, as everyone that jumps in will be given the same pre-defined, fully upgraded ship loadout, though you will be able to check your progress for them in a separate menu.
The Wormholes update has some other features included. PlayStation VR owners will finally be getting optional flight stick support that can already be enjoyed in the PC version of the game, and there’s a new Valkyrie league table to encourage competitive play. CCP has a long list of other tweaks and balances over on the a blog post it released yesterday.
This may well be the last update for the game before this year’s EVE Fanfest event gets underway in April. As always you can expect to see new announcements for Valkyrie at the show as well as other VR titles CCP is working on, like Project Arena.
Look for the update to drop next week on PSVR, Rift and Vive. We’ve reached out to CCP to clarify that the new mode is definitely going to be free.
