EVE: Valkyrie Gets A Non-VR Mode And A Big Price Drop (Update)

Update 2: Eve Valkyrie – Warzone is now live bringing the game together across Rift, Vive, PSVR, non-VR PC, and non-VR PS4 players all at once. If you don’t own the game you can buy it on PC or PS4 for $29.99.

Update: The non-VR version of EVE: Valkyrie is indeed coming to PC too.

Original story: Since its launch alongside the Oculus Rift back in March 2016, CCP Games’ EVE: Valkyrie has remained one of the biggest games for VR headsets. Soon, though, you won’t need a headset to play it.

CCP has just introduced what it calls the first major expansion for Valkyrie, Warzone, which will arrive at the end of next month. According to Lead Designer Andrew Willans over on the PlayStation Blog, it’s designed to be a “complete overhaul” of the game, with the most important new feature being the addition of traditional display support. So far we know that you’ll no longer need a PlayStation VR (PSVR) to play it on PS4, and traditional screen players can team up with VR players too. We’ve reached out to CCP to confirm the non-VR mode is coming to PC VR versions too.

It’s very interesting to see one of VR’s flagship games make headset support optional, and we wonder what drove the decision. It will certainly be an added bonus to open up the game to a new wave of players that can populate the severs more, though we’ll be eager to find out just how well it translates to a traditional screen. CCP itself is still committed to exclusive VR games; it’s releasing sci-fi sports game Sparc on PSVR in just a few weeks’ time.

Warzone also brings gameplay enhancements, like opening up ships straight away and making different classes of ships more distinctive. CCP is adding new weapons and abilities to the game, and there’s a new modular progression system that will allow you to apply modifications. Extraction, meanwhile, is a brand new game mode similar to Capture the Flag and is complemented by two new maps, Fleet and Outpost. Finally, a new rewards system is in place.

If you already own Valkyrie then the expansion arrives for free. Better yet, if you haven’t picked it up yet, the price is dropping all the way down to $29.99.
