HTC’s Viveport Subscription service has been up and running for about a month now, and the company is ready to talk about its most popular apps so far, though the list isn’t hugely surprising.
According to the company, Solfar Studios’ Everest VR is the most popular app on the service to date, though HTC hasn’t provided any specific stats to help confirm that. The experience, which takes you on a whirlwind tour of an ascent of the tallest mountain in the world, is one of the most highly polished apps in Viveport’s current portfolio (if not VR’s portfolio as a whole), so we expected it to be one of the most used apps in the first month. There’s isn’t a huge amount of content to it, though, so it will be interesting to see if that keeps up over time.
Next up is another finely polished app in WeVR’s theBlu. This memorable experience gives you a close encounter with an enormous whale, and has served as many people’s first introduction to VR. It’s a powerful few moments that aren’t soon forgotten, so it earns its place on this list.
Finally, the third-most popular app on the service is arguably the best on there so far; Fantastic Contraption. Created by Northway Games, this cheerful piece has you building vehicles that will transport an object to a goal zone. It’s a simple concept that delivers hours of fun — which is more than most of the apps on the subscription can offer — so we’re happy to see it resonating with the audience.
When the first month is up subscribers will be able to choose another set of apps from the content pool, be they ones they selected last month or something entirely new. Everyone using Viveport’s subscription thus far hasn’t actually paid for it; the first month is free for newcomers.
