Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, is getting its own VR experience produced through a partnership with Sony, The Void, Madam Tussaud’s, and Ghost Corp.
This “multi-layered” display will be housed in Madame Tussaud’s flagship Times Square location. Visitors to the New York tourist attraction will be able to engage in the the Ghostbusters-themed VR attraction beginning on July 1.
The experience itself is being custom built by the team behind The Void – a high profile immersive arcade currently under development in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Void is known primarily for its large-scale play areas, realistic props, and virtually mapped environments. All of these elements will be a part of the display as well, according to a joint announcement from the collaborating companies.
Participants will “experience what it is like to be a Ghostbuster, tracking and trapping a supernatural foe through a New York apartment complex in an environment that combines physical props and sets, real-time interactive effects, and virtual reality technology designed by The Void.”
The fourth originator of this attraction is Ghost Corp. – which is a name that some fans may not be familiar with. Ghost Corp. is a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures that is, “focused on expanding the brand with live-action feature films, animated motion pictures, television, merchandise, and other new entertainment products.”
The Ghostbusters reboot has become something of a controversial property. Its recently released trailer has become the most disliked video ever on YouTube, and its apparent dismissal of the original film’s cast and storyline has become a major sticking point for fans.
Despite this current climate, there’s no doubt the Ghostbusters name still packs a hefty punch. The original still sits in the mid 60’s for the top grossing films of all time and its merchandising machine hummed to great effect when the film first released back in 1984.
Time will tell if history can repeat itself and this new Ghostbusters will be able to elevate tie ins like this VR experience to the same level of success that its ancestor did.
