Much of Google’s work in VR has been consumer-facing, but one of the first initiatives the company launched with the tech was education-focused. Expeditions was a platform to take entire classes on virtual field trips using Google Cardboard. From this week it’s available to everyone with an Android handset.
Expeditions has a new standalone app that allows users to go on solo field trips of their choosing. In the school-focused version of the app kids are taken on guided trips operated by a teacher’s tablet. Here you’ll have full control over where you go and what you see from the app’s deep library of content. Simply select locations or tours to be taken on a slideshow of 360 degree and 3D images with information about the world in which we live.
All you need to take part is a Google Cardboard viewer (and a smartphone, obviously). If you have a Daydream View device then you can use that too. An iOS version of the app is also on the way.
