The UK’s worst soccer team is (obviously) going through a rough patch, but Samsung’s Gear VR is here to pick its players up.
Derbyshire club New Mills AFC has been dubbed “the worst team in England” over the past few months, having recently suffered a 26-game losing streak then being beaten 9-0 in a relegation match. In the past season the team played 35 matches and lost a total of 33, drawing in the other two. It scored a measly 21 goals and conceded a mighty 136. It’s not a pretty sight, but the club was recently treated to a motivational speech from a legendary manager and former player.

As you can see in the video above, the team recently entered its locker rooms to find a bunch of Gear VR headsets waiting for them. Each put a headset on to find none other than former Tottenham Hotspur coach Harry Redknapp paying them a virtual visit. You can see the full 360 degree version of Redknapp’s speech below, in which the manager – now coaching the national Jordan team – locks eye contact with you as he stands in the centre of a pitch. He addresses individual members as the music builds to a crescendo, giving an uplifting talk that’s a little on the ideological side.
It’s hard not to get a little pumped just listening to him.

Alright, so it’s little more than an advert for Gear VR, the Gear 360 camera, and the Galaxy S7 phone that they both work with, but it’s a pretty good way to capture people’s attention all the same. It might even convince some soccer fans to seek out a Gear VR for themselves seeing as a number of carriers are practically giving them away along with new S7 purchases right now. That said, you could also just watch this on any smartphone with a Google Cardboard HMD now that it’s on YouTube.
We’re not sure Redknapp’s speech will really lead New Mills to victory, though. Maybe they should spend some time with Headmaster instead.
