At $3,000, Microsoft’s HoloLens is an expensive proposition, limiting the number of people that have been able to get their hands on one over the past two years. But a new scheme from Abcomrents is looking to make the device more accessible for all.
The rental company, which specializes in providing elaborate and expensive devices such as TVs and even VR headsets this week announced that it will now be lending out HoloLens units too. Unlike many products the site offers, though, you’ll have to specifically reach out to the company to inquire about renting a HoloLens, so we can’t tell you exactly how much it would cost you given the case-by-case nature of the rentals. Should everything work out the company will send you a full HoloLens kit complete with the accessories needed to use it and then you’ll send it back when you’re done with it.
Obviously, rentals are intended for short-term use, making them ideal for featuring at events or testing out the kit before buying one, but not so great for everyday use and development. Rentals are only open to the US and Canada, though Microsoft says it’s working on bringing the scheme to other countries too.
Elsewhere, HoloLens is also expanding to more countries, with Microsoft this week announcing that it will soon be selling the kit in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. This takes the total number of countries you can now get HoloLens in to 41. With the launch of Magic Leap One looming, can Microsoft maintain its foothold in this market throughout 2018?
