Insomniac Games' Edge of Nowhere Gets Native Touch Support

Picked up one of those new Oculus Rift bundles that doesn’t have an Xbox controller but still want to play Insomniac Games’ Edge of Nowhere? We’ve got good news for you.

Insomniac yesterday released a surprise update for its debut VR game that adds native Oculus Touch controller support. That means you can use the two position-tracked controllers as a sort of stand-in for a gamepad, using the dual analog sticks and range of buttons to control the third-person action game. Note that it doesn’t mean that game suddenly has motion controls; it’s not really designed for that.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen an Oculus-exclusive gamepad game upgrade to feature Touch support; Playful Corp’s Lucky’s Tale integrated the controllers earlier this year too.

This is great news for Rift owners as Edge of Nowhere remains one of our favorite games on the platform. Taking after the likes of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, the game sees you battling madness as you head to snowy arctic wastes in search of a lost expedition crew. ” You’ll find yourself holding your breath in anticipation for whatever the next moment of terror holds as the sweat builds on your palms and the hair on your neck continues to rise,” Games Editor David Jagneaux said in our review. “At the story’s climax, you’re left questioning not only the events that transpired, but also your own sanity as well.”

We’re still waiting for some of Rift’s other launch-window titles to get native Touch support. Gunfire Games’ Chronos is a good example, though back in April Oculus released an update that does allow Touch to simulate gamepads. You can play these games with Touch already, then, it’s just that they won’t be properly optimized for the controllers.
