Journey to the Centre of an Active Volcano in Red Bull's Latest 360 Video

A few weeks ago we highlighted some incredible 360 degree footage of a volcano erupting. Now the team at Red Bull has pulled off something even more daring.

This amazing new 360 video is shot in Vanuatu, a small country made up of around 80 islands residing in the South Pacific Ocean. It’s here that a small expedition team consisting of photographer Ulla Lohmann and husband Sebastian Hoffman climb into the active Benbow volcano, a 300 meter deep behemoth that, as the video states, emits more gas than any other volcano in the world.

The five minute clip follows the team’s journey to the centre of the volcano. In a local village, they enlist the support of a number of people to help them carry equipment to base camp through a jungle and across an ash plane. It’s a few minutes in before you catch an astonishing glimpse of the magma that looms within Benbow, but the video doesn’t disappoint as the crew descends into the inner crater. The final few moments will be a treat for anyone, especially those looking through Google Cardboard.

To do this, load up the video on the YouTube iOS or Android app and touch the Cardboard icon that should be on display. Then insert your phone into a compatible device and enjoy. You can also watch it on your Gear VR through the Samsung internet browser app, again heading to YouTube.

I’d certainly recommend giving it a shot; this video captures so amazing locations from start to finish, some of which will take your breath away. Those ash planes, for example, create a striking contrast with the jungle that came before it, and the brilliant orange glow of magma captured through the swirl of volcanic mist is hypnotising to say the least. Footage was shot to preview the full episode of Red Bull’s Explorers series, which can also be seen for free.
