At E3 last month Sony showed off a heap of new game trailers whilst decorating the stage around them to fit the tone. Zombies hung from the ceiling during a Days Gone demo, for example. It was a cool way to spruce up the showcase, but The Lost Bear is taking the concept and running with it in VR.
Announced today for PlayStation VR (PSVR), The Lost Bear is the debut game from Odd Bug Studio, a UK-based indie developer getting publishing support from Fabrik. The game is a 2D platformer with a hand-painted art style. Wondering how that will fit into VR? The Lost Bear plays out on a screen in a theater, the surroundings of which will change to fit the protagonist’s environment as they progress. It uses a combination of 2D art and 3D assets to pull off a unique atmosphere unlike anything else we’ve seen in VR.
It’s a pretty neat idea, which you can see in action in the trailer below.
You control Walnet, a young girl that sets out on a journey to save her teddy bear from the evil Toy Snatcher. Lots of running and jumping follows. Based on the trailer the game carries a breezy, gentle tone, though we can see hints of Limbo-esque darkness towards the end.
Sadly, that’s pretty much all we know about the game so far. We’ve reached out to Odd Bug to ask when the game’s due for release.
