Late last year we reported on the formation of Subdream Studios, a new game developer founded by former Colopl Ni CEO, Jikhan Jung. Aided by HTC’s Vive X accelerator, the team was set to focus on multiplayer VR experiences and, today, they’re launching their first in Mega Overload.
Here players can expect an arcade twist on the VR wave shooter, a genre that we’re all familiar with by now. You and a friend can team up to blast away endless waves of incoming Mega Bots with dual blasters. Enemies have different attack patterns, meaning you’ll have to learn the intricacies of each if you’re to reach the top of an online leaderboard.
For now the game’s been optimized for the HTC Vive and accommodates room-scale gameplay with two Vive wand controllers. There’s no word yet as to if it will also come to the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR (PSVR).
In a press release, Subdream stressed that the game’s co-op option is “perfect for VR arcades”, suggesting that the studio has ambitions to be just as successful with location-based VR as it wants to be in the home. The studio is also working on other social VR experiences.
Mega Overload is available now on Steam for $14.99.
