Last month, the popular virtual reality content studio known as VRSE went through a bit of a rebranding. Following a $12.56 million round of capital fundraising, Vrse renamed itself “Within.” Now, Within is expanding its content focus with a project that should excite both VR enthusiasts, and fans of appointment television: a Mr. Robot VR experience.
Season 2 of Mr. Robot began on July 13, and, to publicize its return, USA and Within are announcing a special 12-minute VR experience that will be broadcast live on Thursday, July 20. The one-time simulcast will be conducted as part of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and will be available starting at 1: 45 PM ET.
The experience will be available for free through the Within app on Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. But hurry, the nature of this broadcast is such that if you miss it live you may not see it at all. Visitors to Comic-Con this year that take part in the Mr. Robot premiere event will be given Google Cardboard headsets to view the experience on in one large group.
Exact details on the experience’s content are still sparse. So far the only thing confirmed is that it will be written and directed by the creator of Mr. Robot himself, Sam Esmail.
Mr. Robot, for those who may not know, premiered last year on USA and quickly became a cult phenomenon. The show centers around Elliot – an anti-social computer genius with a Robin Hood complex – and his crusade to destroy the giant corporations he believes are ruining people’s lives. To do this, Elliot joins a hacker group called FSOCIETY and participates in acts of online espionage against big business. Mr. Robot has drawn viewer and critical praise for its slow-burn story, amazing cinematography, unreliable narration, and “holy crap” twists.
