NVIDIA's New Titan X Card is the VR-Boosting Beast We'd Expect it to Be

NVIDIA's New Titan X Card is the VR-Boosting Beast We'd Expect it to Be

NVIDIA’s new GTX 1080 graphics card manages to surpass even last year’s Titan X model in performance. So how does the company top that? By releasing a brand new Titan X, of course.

The latest card, which follows the release of the 1080, 1070 and 1060 models, has been revealed this week as the new gold standard from the company. It’s a surefire way to get the most out of your PC games and, of course, all your Oculus Rift and HTC Vive content. You can watch a trailer for it below, not that a trailer for a graphics card can tell you much.

What is does reveal is a lengthy set of specs – first posted on the NVIDIA blog – that we’ve listed below.

  • 11 TFLOPS FP32
  • 44 TOPS INT8 (new deep learning inferencing instruction)
  • 12B transistors
  • 3,584 CUDA cores at 1.53GHz (versus 3,072 cores at 1.08GHz in previous TITAN X)
  • Up to 60% faster performance than previous TITAN X
  • High performance engineering for maximum overclocking
  • 12 GB of GDDR5X memory (480 GB/s)

Even without the technical know how, you can look at that list and see that this is a serious contender. Both Oculus and HTC set the GTX 970 graphics card as the recommended requirement for running VR experiences and this goes above and beyond that by some way. We’ll be eager to see what our VR content will look like running on this new beast, though no footage of games running on Titan X has been revealed just yet.

One of the most important aspects of NVIDIA’s line-up this year has been the dramatic reductions in price the company has made for its flagship models. The Titan X, though, is still very much priced for the enthusiast market, coming in at an expectedly expensive $1,200. The device will launch in just a few weeks’ time on August 2nd in both North America and Europe and will be coming to North America soon.

This looks to round out NVIDIA’s 2016 line-up, then, though we may see some more announcements from the company. Looking forward, we can’t wait to see where GPU makers take us next.
