New Oculus Rift And Gear VR Releases For The Week Of 09/18/16

It’s another ho-hum week for Oculus Rift owners, though they’re getting thrown a pretty meaty bone (look at the developer of the first game and you’ll understand that joke.) Gear VR, meanwhile, has plenty of interesting new content to dive into. Cherish it while you can, mobile VR fans.

If you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. And don’t forget that UploadVR has a Steam community group, complete with a curated list of recommendations so that you don’t have to waste any money finding out what’s good in the world of VR.

We also have a top list of the best Rift games and best Gear VR games— both of which are updated every few months with the latest and greatest options.

Gang Beasts, from Boneloaf and Coatsink
Price: $19.99 (Rift)

A local multiplayer gem comes to the Oculus Rift, though admittedly loses a little something in the process. Still, this is a fantastically fun and frantic brawler that could be a fitting swan song to the gamepad era of Rift as Touch approaches.

Recommendation: Totally worth it if you’d prefer to play the game online rather than locally.

Balloon Shooter, from Vi-Sense
Price: $4.99 (Gear)

This is a spritely little on-rail first-person shooter for Gear. Take down enemies with a bow and arrow as you hover along inside a hot air balloon. It’s hardly life changing but it looks well produced and could provide a few hours of fun.

Recommendation: Starved Gear fans should check this out.

dopamine

DOPAMINE, from Synamon
Price: $1.99 (Gear)

This is… okay I don’t know what this is exactly. You seem to be a small girl zipping around deep space shooting mines at a speed that’s hard to keep up with. Oh and it’s multiplayer. It’s utterly bewildering but, with a name like DOPAMINE, that’s to be expected.

Recommendation: If you go for this you’re braver than I am.

brainvr

BrainVR, from Emerald LJO
Price: Free (Gear)

Educational VR FTW! Explore the human brain with your Gear VR, looking at the cortex, blood supply and nerve fiber. Impressively, this uses a real brain that was measured at the Stanford Radiological Sciences Laboratory using MRI. Fancy.

Recommendation: If you fancy expanding your own brain, check this out.

gem-monster

Gem Monster, from ChenGame
Price: $4.99 (Gear)

Now here’s something different looking. Here you battle monsters made of gems, which you must destroy in order to bring them down. You match up gems and gather upgrades to battle bigger monsters. The sky setting is beautiful, too.

Recommendation: Definitely worth checking out if you’re in need of a Gear game.

SLIVER.tv, from SLIVER.tv
Price: Free (Gear)

An eSports streaming app that lets you watch matches from inside games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends. Next month it’ll even be live streaming an ESL match for the former.

Recommendation: If eSports are your thing this is a good bet.

HEX: Heavy Encounter EXOsuit, from Robot Invader
Price: $2.99 (Gear)

The developer of Dead Secret returns with a radically different type of experience. Sadly, it doesn’t look half as interesting as its last project; it’s a first-person gallery shooter in which aiming it mapped to your head movements.

Recommendation: We’re not too keen on Robot’s latest, sadly, but it’s not terrible

mahjong

Relaxing VR Games: Mahjong, from Daedalic Entertainment
Price: $2.99 (Gear)

If you really wanted to play Mahjong in VR then chances are you’ve already done it, but if not then you may want to consider this chilled out take on the game. There are 162 boards to play on and simply relax to.

Recommendation: If you’re dying to play Mahjong in VR then this is for you.

Dimensional Intersection, from Nicalis
Price: $4.99 (Rift)

A new music visualizer for Rift with its own tracks from artists like Soulacybin, Land Switcher and MONS. I don’t know if these people/bands are popular but I’m also not the type of person that would know.

Recommendation: Something to check out for music fans.

vr-church

VR Church: Psalms, from Immersive Gaming
Price: Free (Gear)

VR literally gets biblical. You’re dropped into a calm, peaceful environment where you can listen to worship music and read from Psalms. Well, we can at least say it’s unlike anything else on the Gear VR right now.

Recommendation: I mean you know if this is for you or not.

DISCOVR WA, from Parks and Wildlife
Price: Free (Rift, Gear)

More national park VR exploration, this time from Western Australia. We normally give 360 apps a miss but this one goes above and beyond with an intuitive user interface that should help educate people.

Recommendation: A good example of what VR can do for education and exploration.

TwinForce, from ETI
Price: $4.99 (Rift)

Hats off to ETI; they’ve managed to put VR support into their scrolling shooter and it doesn’t look terrible. In fact, TwinForce’s retro shoot ’em up campaign looks like it could be a nice diversion from the VR sandboxes and wave shooters we’re so used to.

Recommendation: If the genre appeals to you, then we suggest checking this one out.

Thrills & Chills – Roller Coasters, from VRisch
Price: $4.99 (Rift, currently discounted)

The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been out for just under six months now and people still think it’s a good idea to release VR roller coasters for them. In most cases, it’s not a good idea. It’s a bad idea. Please, if you do, at least make it interesting in some way or try to combat the motion sickness.

Recommendation: Not really recommended.

showdown-vr

ShowdownVR, from Frontseat Studio
Price: $14.99 (Rift)

Bit of a weird one. You play as various ships, teleporting between them and dodging fire in naval warfare. You initiate counter attacks to defeat opponents and gain high scores. It looks pretty unique but it’s a risk at $14.99

Recommendation: Maybe get a friend to buy it first, and then laugh if it’s rubbish.
