New Ready Player One Trailer Focuses On The Fight For VR's Future

Ready Player One is shaping up to be an absolute visual treat. Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s popular novel of the same name is due to hit theaters on March 29 and this latest trailer reveals even more about the massive war that’s waging on the frontlines of the future.

In the movie, eccentric visionary James Halliday (Mark Rylance) is the creator of a VR paradise world, The Oasis, in which upon his death he hid an “Easter Egg” item. Whoever finds it first will be awarded a massive fortune and controlling stake in his company. We follow Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) on his journey to find the egg and prevent the Oasis from falling into the wrong hands.

Take a look at the latest trailer that just posted right here and embedded below, which is set to an ethereal cover of Come With Me (Pure Imagination) from the original Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory film:

Each time Warner Bros. has revealed new details about the film it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, Spielberg’s knack for delivering absolutely gorgeous scenes is clearly intact and Ready Player One will likely be a rollercoaster ride to watch in theaters. But then on the other hand, fans of the book are noticing a lot of changes that will significantly impact the story as a whole.

Regardless, it looks like it should at the very least be a fun film to watch. Just like the book it’s based on, you can expect it be jam-packed full of pop culture homages and references. Just in this trailer alone we get to see a ton of relics from the 70s, 80s, and modern day all crammed onto one screen in the massive final battle that’s teased at the end. Keep an eye out for Master Chief near the 01:37 mark.

Worth noting is the way Spielberg is choosing to depict VR in the film. In the book, Cline is rather vague on exactly how the VR rigs work in terms of physicality and what users actually do to interact. But in the film we see Watts walking in place in his apartment and even see people running full-speed down a city street while wearing their HMDs and running inside the VR world. It makes me wonder what kind of Guardian system or Chaperone system they have in the future that allows that much freedom without fear of running into someone or something.

Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29th. Let us know what you think from what you’ve seen of the film so far down in the comments below!
