This week sees the launch of the long-anticipated live action remake of beloved anime movie, Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson. As you probably guessed, there’ll be a VR experience tying into the movie too.
This isn’t just any old 360 video, though; this is a new Oculus Studios project, created as a collaboration between production studios Rewind, Here Be Dragons, and Paramount and Dreamworks. We do have a 360 teaser below, but the full experience will apparently be a full VR piece that’s releasing on both the Oculus Rift and Gear VR headsets this Friday, March 29th. A 360 video will also be available via the Facebook 360 app.

There isn’t much else to go on right now, but the sci-fi world of Ghost in the Shell is one that we’ve longed to visit in VR, and there have been other tie-in experiences to the franchise before. The film, which itself is based off of a manga that started in 1989, depicts a dystopian 2029 in which the world is connected through an electronic network and humans access ‘shells’, cybernetic bodies that give users super powers.
In a way, then, the series has some roots in VR, though it’s not quite full-on Matrix. We’ll have more details about the app on Friday.
