Onward Is Getting New Maps Tomorrow, New Mode And Improved Controls Now

Downpour Interactive’s Onward was treated to a flashy display at Oculus Connect’s keynote speech a few weeks ago, and now it’s preparing to ship one of its biggest updates yet.

Tomorrow, Onward will be getting some new maps, but the first half of this week’s update is already out and it’s got plenty of notable features. That includes a new game mode, Evac Operations, which is a cooperative game type against AI players. It’s essentially the game’s take on a wave shooter, getting you to fend off an infinite number of enemies before escaping onto an evac helicopter. For those that aren’t such a big fan of competitive multiplayer this sounds like the mode for you. It replaces the old Defend mode.

Downpour has also spent time refining the game’s controls, including several new options this week. The developer has implemented systems to simplify syringe use, initiate sprinting faster and even refined the snap turn options for those not playing with 360-degree setups. You can check out all of the control improvements in the full changelog. The game’s compatible with both Vive and Rift so between all these new options you should be able to find your perfect setup for either the Vive wands or Touch controllers.

Elsewhere, the team has replaced the L96 weapon with the M40A5 and switched out the SVU for the SVD. There’s also some other balancing tweaks and bug fixes to game the overall experience a little smoother. Onward remains in Early Access for now, but this week’s updates bring it a step closer to the full version.

As for the maps, we’re yet to see what they’ll be like, but check back tomorrow when they go live.
