Playing 3D Platformer Yooka-Laylee In VR With This Mod Feels Like Lucky's Tale

Yooka-Laylee from Playtonic recently released for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and soon the Nintendo Switch in a bid to help revive the 3D platformer genre that’s fallen to the wayside in recent years. Last year’s Ratchet and Clank reboot was wonderful. Now with many of the original Rare developers that worked on the Banjo-Kazooie franchise forming up this new game studio and raising millions on Kickstarter, this was a very anticipated release for retro gamers with a love for collectathons.

The game’s been met with mixed reviews thus far, but for what it’s worth, I enjoyed it for the most part when I played it. If you ever tried Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, or any similar titles then you know exactly what to expect. What you’ll realize though is that this is far from made for VR. It’s a fast-paced precision-based 3D platformer that has you running, jumping, and exploring all over tropical islands and other fantastic locations. But this OpenVR mod for the HTC Vive by Reddit user Eusth is changing all of that.

By instituting a camera that’s much-like the one used in games like Lucky’s Tale, you’ll control the chameleon Yooka and his bat friend Laylee from the third-person perspective. Your field of view will zoom in when you turn quickly to help limit nausea, but otherwise, it’s basically the same game, with the added benefits of VR immersion and 3D effects.

However, keep in mind this game is not optimized for VR and was not designed to be played this way, so your mileage will likely vary based on performance and countless other factors.

You can download the necessary files and read the instructions from GitHub right here. What do you think of this? Do you want more 3D platformers in VR? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below!
