Delays are an unfortunate part of pretty much any industry, and VR is no exception. Some of PlayStation VR’s most anticipated games likely aren’t going to make their original release windows, for example.
It was starting to look unlikely that Double Fine’s Psychonauts: In The Rhombus Of Ruin was going to make its original Q4 2016 release window, and the developer recently confirmed that it probably isn’t going to happen. When asked if the game might now release in Q1 2017 over on Twitter, Double Fine’s official account replied: “most likely, yes, working hard on finishing it now!”
There’s a slim chance it could hit before the end of the year, then, but don’t hold your breath.
In The Rhombus Of Ruin marks the long-awaited return of the Psychonauts franchise. It picks up right after the end of the first game and bridges the gap for the upcoming full sequel. Played from first-person, you’ll use supernatural powers like telekinesis.
At the same time, Double Fine has also announced that another game set to support PS VR, the PlayStation 4 version of Boneloaf’s Gang Beasts [Review: 7/10], will not be releasing this year. On an official FAQ the developer explained that it still had “modifications and fixes” to make, and that the team was pushing for a Q1 2017 release. Gang Beasts isn’t expected to release with PS VR support but instead integrate the headset later on. It’s already available in Early Access on Oculus Rift.
Gang Beasts is a multiplayer brawler that’s gained a lot of love from fans over the past few years. VR support also adds online multiplayer to the game for the first time.
Still, there’s plenty to play on PS VR to close out this year. How We Soar hit the headset a few weeks back, and nDreams Perfect launches in the US today, with an EU release following next week. Rest assured your headset won’t be gathering dust over the holiday season.
