PSVR’s RIGS Is Free For PS Plus Subscribers This Month

by Jamie Feltham • August 30th, 2017

We’ve long wondered when Sony’s PlayStation Plus service, which offers free games to subscribers every month, would start offering full PlayStation VR (PSVR) titles. Now we have our answer.

RIGS: Mechanised Combat League will be free for subscribers in September. This is the first time a full game exclusive to PSVR has been offered on the service, and it’s available in addition to the two traditional games being introduced next month (Infamous: Second Son and Child of Light). It’s not clear how long RIGS will be available for free nor if Sony intends to add new VR games every month from here on out, but best snap it up as fast as possible if you haven’t already.

So long as you remain a Plus subscriber ($59.99 a year) you’ll be able to keep hold of your digital copy of the game.

This is an interesting choice of free offering for PSVR. RIGS is a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) in which players pilot mechs in futuristic sports arenas across the globe. It’s played using the DualShock 4 gamepad. We were big fans of it when it launched alongside PSVR back in October last year, though as with many VR games we’ve seen reports of players struggling to find games thanks to empty servers. Could this offer help to repopulate the servers?

Furthermore, Guerrilla Cambridge, the game’s developer, was shuttered by Sony just a few months after launch. Sony confirmed to UploadVR at the time that RIGS wouldn’t receive any more DLC, having launched one add-on just weeks before.

It could well be that Sony is testing the popularity of PSVR titles with this month’s offering, so if you want to see more of them on offer than it might be an idea to send positive signs.

Wow! This is quite a good game, and I’m looking forward to the influx of new users. I almost regret buying it when I did — I do like free! Well, free-ish, anyhow…

“Here’s a bonus for PlayStation VR owners: PS Plus members in the US and Canada will also get RIGS Mechanized Combat League as a free bonus game from September 5 through November 7. RIGS is a first-person arena-based shooter developed from the ground up for PS VR. Set in the year 2065, it immerses players in an intense, all-action future sport that mixes elements from different athletic fields like combat sports, motorsports, basketball and football.”

Key point is from September 5 through November 7th, so I doubt this will become a standard, unless of course they do 1 VR title every 2 months on top of the standard 6 titles every 1 month, which would be kind of interesting…

I had this, pretty decent and highly polised (sold PSVR and now on rift which is of course 10 x better) , the only thing is Rigs did NO feel very “VR” like due to the overly present cockpit, battlezone felt great so it’s not cockpits themselves jut the Rigs system they (and I turned off the safety aids as I have my VR legs too) and still it felt like I was WATCHING the game on a screen in that cockpit. a bridge too far… not much sense of presence if any (at least in game – in menus? yes)

To bad the studio who created this game was shut down. Won’t be any more support for the game.

I already own Rigs but its great for PSVR owners. Long live PSVR.

They should have made it free in all regions, doing it in limited areas doesn’t help that much, they need to have a big community to make it last, not small life support bursts.
