Ready Player One, the Steven Spielberg film based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name, is a veritable success having now earned over $500 million globally. Nearly half of that comes from China alone, sitting at over $200 million from that region. Regardless of your thoughts on the book and/or movie, we’d wager this is a definitively positive thing for the VR industry.
Domestically Ready Player One has brought in more than $120 million in the US. In our review, we praised the technical achievement, creativity, and inventive (and mostly grounded) perspective the film’s world has for the future of virtual reality. There are a ton of changes from the book, but overall we think each stand on their own and are both worth consuming.
As part of a promotional plan for the film, there is a “beta” version of The Oasis (the Ready Player One VR world) available for download on headsets like the Rift and Vive.
