As much as we’re looking forward to Ready Player One hitting cinemas in a few weeks’ time, we also can’t wait to see what HTC has in store for its partnership to produce VR content based on the book and film. We’ll get the first glimpse of that at this year’s South By Southwest Festival (SXSW).
Ready Player One is taking over the Brazos Hall city block from March 9th – 11th with a bunch of promotional events for the movie. On the VR side, users can slip on a Vive and try out the Ready Player One Avatar Creator, which lets them choose a new avatar and send it to their email address. Vive will also have VR versions of classic arcade games that have been redesigned in the film’s image.
There’s even going to be a WaveVR DJ shet from Tye Sheridan, who appears in the film. Vive units will also be available to win via a competition that will include ’80s trivia, arcade games and searching for clues.
HTC’s partnership with Ready Player One includes multiple VR experiences, so it may be that we see more promotional VR content as the film’s release approaches at the end of March. There’s no word yet on if these experiences could make their way to a home release.
