Put away the drum kit and lock away the guitar: your latest virtual reality toy is the DJ deck you’ve always dreamed of.
Developed by Philip Mackenzie, Reality Decks is a new Oculus Rift app launching today. It’s a comprehensive DJ simulator that allows you to mix and record using virtual vinyl turn tables without having to set up expensive gear in your bedroom. It’s designed as a professional grade app so that aspiring DJs can use it for training, but also aims to support more casual players that are just looking to have a little fun, too. Check it out in the trailer below.
On the professional side, Reality Decks visualizes waveforms in on the surface of the vinyl in real time so that you can see the beat approaching. It also includes six tutorials that will guide you through the basics of using the decks. As for the music, there are 10 tracks from aspiring artists right now along with five practice tracks and 25 vocal books for scratching. You’ll also be able to load your own music tracks with will be given virtual form as vinyls.
It looks like a great tool for DJ fans and we’d love to see it taken further. We could see ourselves attending a virtual party with someone at the decks, for example, or have two users working together on the same deck.
Reality Decks is available at a standard price of $19.99 on the Oculus Rift with a 15% discount running for the first week.
