'Resident Evil 7' Lantern Trailer Shines Light On The Game's Story

At E3 2016, it was revealed that Capcom’s first virtual reality project would be a Resident Evil title for the upcoming PlayStation VR headset. Resident Evil 7: biohazard is the name of this horrifying title and today a new trailer has been released that begins to shine some light on the game’s mysterious storyline.

Check out the game’s official description from the PlayStation blog:

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard takes place in Dulvey, Louisiana, where something’s amiss. Nobody’s heard from Jack or Marguerite Baker in ages, with rumors flying about what may have happened to them. At the end of Beginning Hour, you see a tagline that reads “Meet the Family,” and in that demo, you get a glimpse at the supposedly missing Jack Baker.

This trailer, dubbed “Lantern”, is the first extended look at Biohazard that we’ve seen since some grainy, over the shoulder footage was captured in July. The video is clearly meant to emphasize the unique, immersive aspects of this title as the entire thing is shown in the now HUD-less and gunless first person perspective that VR is known for.

The trailer demonstrates that biohazard will not be a game for the faint of heart. The game’s “keep walking and try not to scream,” aesthetic is reminiscent of both the recent smash-hit PT demo from Konami, and biohazard’s own tech-demo direct predecessor Kitchen.

Biohazard is also heavily embracing the found-footage style of storytelling that was originally made popular by films like The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield. A small slice of the game, known as Beginning Hour, was released to PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS4 earlier this year, breaking records in the process, and that demo centered around a VHS tape that revealed the tragic fate of a film crew known as the “Sewer Gators.”

The lantern trailer gives you first glimpse at another tape from the game simply titled “Mia.” Judging from what we see in the video, Mia is not someone that any of us would like to be.

Watch this one with the lights on, people.
