Update: Robinson: The Journey Due For Oculus Rift Next Month

Update: Crytek has informed UploadVR that it currently doesn’t have plans to bring Robinson to Oculus Touch or the HTC Vive, though it will “see what comes after” the original Rift release.

Original story: Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey [Review: 7/10] won’t be a PlayStation VR exclusive for much longer; the game’s coming to Oculus Rift next month.

The developer shared very little about the port, which will bring the adventure game from console to PC. We’ve asked Crytek if there are any plans to support the Rift’s new Touch controllers, though the game only supports the DualShock 4 on PS VR, so expect gamepad support at the very least. As we noted in our review, the game certainly seems suited to motion controls, and Crytek already added them to its last Rift game, The Climb.

We’ve also asked after the possibility of an HTC Vive release, though its absence from the press release suggests Vive owners might have to wait a little longer.

Robinson casts players as a young boy named Robin that crash lands on an uncharted planet named Tyson III which is infested with dinosaurs. As Robin builds a new life for himself in the jungle, he begins to investigate if there might be other survivors from the ship he came from. Together with his A.I. companion, HIGS, and pet T-Rex, Laika, you’ll explore various areas of the planet, solving puzzles and completing platforming segments.

I reviewed Robinson when it hit PlayStation VR last month. While fun to play and gorgeous to look at, it ultimately felt like the first act in a bigger story. “This is PS VR’s grandest adventure yet,” I wrote, “but a deeper sequel that fights off frustration, adds to the mechanics and expands on the story could go much further still.”

There are doubts as to if we actually get that sequel this week, as Crytek announced that it was to close several of its studios around the world. We’ve reached out to the company to ask how this affects its plans for VR, and we’ll update if we hear back.
