As rumors last week suggested, Samsung has indeed got a new Gear VR prepped and ready to go for the launch of its Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, also revealed today.
It doesn’t sound like much is new in this update; it’s simply bigger to accommodate the new phone, which features the biggest screen on a Note device ever (6.3 inches, to be exact). Don’t worry, though, it’s backwards compatible with Galaxy S8 and S8+, the S7 and S7 edge, the Note 5, and the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6+. It costs $129.99 and it comes with the motion controller introduced earlier this year.
No images of the device are available yet (the one above is of the S8 version) but we’ll get them to you when we can.
So we’re still waiting on 4K displays and positional tracking for mobile VR, then. Samsung does have a standalone VR headset in the works, though, which has inside-out positional tracking.
Pre-orders launch tomorrow and the headset arrives on September 15th.
