Sony's Smurfs Partner With Microsoft's HoloLens For VR Experience

If you ever saw a real Smurf, chances are you’d step on them before they could start singing. This official new HoloLens project might not let you squish the little critters, but it does bringing them into the real world.

Sony Pictures Animation teamed up with Team AOL, Unit 9 and OMD to develop this new mixed reality game, in which players guide the tiny blue people around virtual environments that mix with real world locations as they hunt for pieces of a map. The Smurfs follow the user’s finger, and have to watch out for plants that will scoop them up and spit them out. You can check out a trailer for the project below.

HoloLens isn’t the first platform we’d think of for movie-based tie-ins, at least not at this early stage in the tech’s life, but it does seem like a good fit for the platform. It reminds us of Young Conker, the HoloLens developer edition launch title that showcased gaming possibilities on the headset, or even the HoloLems project also revealed this week.
