When I look at the landscape of VR titles most of them fall into one of two camps. There are the shovelware, half-baked, tech demo ripoffs that do little more than sell you a single game mechanic as an excuse to take your money. This is the majority of the over 1,000 pieces of VR content on Steam right now and it’s a shame, but it’s the reality. Then there are the bigger titles that actually have publishers/funding backing them from companies like Oculus, or Sony, or Ubisoft, or Bethesda. These are the titles most people are aware of and look forward to.
But somewhere in the middle are the big, ambitious indie projects that earn hype by showing off their ideas and crafting the types of games people want to play. The SoulKeeper VR, one of the most ambitious indie VR projects we’ve seen to date, falls into that third category and it’s finally releasing onto Steam Early Access for both Rift with Touch and the HTC Vive on August 15th, 2017.
We’ve gone hands-on with the game several times throughout its development over the past 14 months and seeing it slowly evolve from rough concept to playable game has been exciting. At first it only had a single room, then it expanded to multiple areas, and then it became a full building packed with puzzles and enemies in its pre-Early Access state.
Once it hits Early Access the list of features is expected to include more enemies, spells, levels, and actual NPC dialogue. You can watch the Early Access date trailer above, or the gameplay video below, for more insight into what playing the game is like.
