As virtual reality continues to grow, more and more creatives use the medium to express their inventiveness and innovation. Thus, more platforms are seeking out the best creations in the race for relevance during VR’s youth. Specular Theory, founded in 2013, is another app stepping into the race and is now available in the Oculus store for Gear VR.
Specular Theory wants great content, but doesn’t want to just be another portal of videos. The crew there doesn’t take submissions from outside sources, instead focusing on bringing the best out of their in-house projects with clients. In the future, the platform may be open to like-minded collaborators that would like to take advantage of Specular’s production tools.
Specular Theory aspires to be a one stop shop for creatives, handling VR content production, telepresence, editing, visual effects, mobile apps and game development. Being available on the Oculus store brings them some exposure with not only those just seeking to watch solid content, but those creating it as well.
On their YouTube you can find highlights from Specular Theory’s various partnerships, including a 360-degree video campaign before Terminator: Genisys’ release in 2015. Often using a first-person perspective to show what a terminator sees in the various Terminator films, Paramount Studios and Specular Theory collaborated o YouTube to bring that same aesthetic to viewers. Specular Theory also has features focused on issues that may hit close to home with their Perspective series, using the virtual reality platform to address social issues and show how perception can influence (and even define) individual experiences.
With Specular tapping deep subjects along with entertainment topics, like bringing video game science to life in VR and putting viewers behind the wheel of cars, the company has a lot of potential as virtual reality evolves and is adopted by more and more platforms.
