Star Wars And Stranger Things Highlight Google's Pixel 2 AR Stickers

Google is bringing AR Stickers later this year to its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones that react to the other stickers as well as the world around them.

I got to see a demo of the new feature with Google’s Clay Bavor. He showed how you can place multiple AR stickers in a single space and size them to your liking. I saw, for instance, two versions of the demogorgon from Stranger Things. One was life size and the other stood action figure-sized on the table. He also placed Eleven from the show in the space and she immediately interacted with the creature. The lighting on the AR characters also adjusts dynamically as well, so the digital characters look more realistically inserted into the scene no matter the environment.

As with the new Daydream View demo, I was impressed by the quality of the speakers on the new Pixel 2. A screaming demogorgon is alarming when you hear it coming out of that phone. Bavor also placed the characters in a hallway at Google’s offices, then walked down a different hallway and returned and both characters were in the exact same place in the real world.

Google will be working with Disney on Star Wars AR Stickers, and is producing a series of expressive food items that look tuned for sharing on social media. The feature is exclusive to the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
