Steam Is Finally Getting A Long-Overdue Makeover

Steam Is Finally Getting A Long-Overdue Makeover

Valve will soon introduce an entirely refreshed way to manage your Steam games, including VR titles.

On September 17 the company will launch the New Steam Library Open Beta. The beta will overhaul the area of Steam from which you browse, install and open all the games you’ve accumulated on the platform over the years. For starters, there’s a new landing page that presents your games almost like a line of books or DVD cases a set of shelves, making it faster to jump into games on regular rotation.

Steam Library Update 2

Perhaps the most promising new feature, though, is clearer indication on when a game has been updated. If you like to play games that get updates regularly (*cough* No Man’s Sky Beyond *cough*), this should make changes much clearer to you.

Beyond the visual overhaul, Steam is also giving developers new tools to alert players to updates and events in their games. This will allow creators to cherry-pick what updates are pushed to customer’s notifications rather than bombarding them with alerts about every small patch.

Steam Library Update 3

Though this isn’t a VR-specific update, it’ll come as welcome news to many that have stuck with Steam in the past years. Certainly I know I have trouble navigating the hundreds of games in my library. I’ll always welcome new options to combat that.

Valve hasn’t said how long it’s planning to run the beta for, though it’s open to one and all. With big changes like this coming to the traditional version of Steam, we’re wondering if there might be some tweaks in store for how you interact with the platform in VR, too.
