VR already has plenty of horror games to scare yourself silly with, but the genre hasn’t really shown up in AR yet. It might seem like an odd fit for the platform, but immersive entertainment studio Clever Fox is trying its hand at it during ScareLA.
The Summoning will be on display at the event at the LA Convention Center next week on August 5th – 6th. Clever Fox has already created several 360 degree horror experiences for VR over the past few years, but this piece will see users exploring the sealed basement of a Hollywood hotel using their phones. You’re cast as an urban explorer investigating a trail left by an occultist group following a killing spree. Using your phone, you’ll uncover a hidden dimension within.
Sadly we don’t have any images of the experience itself to show you, though the Android AR Viewer app (Clever Fox AR Viewer) is now available for free.
We’re eager to see how well horror would translate to AR. The genre makes a lot of sense in VR due to the immersion and added isolation of sealing yourself off from the real world, but you don’t get that same experience in AR. Can experiences like The Summoning really deliver the sort of chills horror fans crave?
Missing out on ScareLA? Then you’ll also get the chance to see the experience at Arqade Immersive Entertainment Complex in downtown Los Angeles starting in mid-August through Halloween. Clever Fox is also offering a Collector’s Edition Box Set limited to 500 units that includes original prints, a digital story companion, and a certificate of authenticity. It costs $29.99.
