SUPERHOT VR Will Be Free to Kickstarter Backers, Dev Explains Oculus Debut

Oculus didn’t have a ton of new games to show off at E3 2016, but what it did have was pretty exciting. Among these was SUPERHOT VR.

You may recall this stylish shooter running a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign all the way back in 2014. The game raised a massive $250,798 and was finally released earlier this year. VR support, however, was nowhere to be found despite the developer promising it in its Kickstarter campaign and even showcasing the game running on the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2) at later events. But backers still after that VR support need not worry; the developer will give it to them for free.

The studio confirmed as much in a new blog post that also detailed why the team decided to go with timed exclusivity on Oculus Rift and its Oculus Touch controllers. According to the blog, the team decided that it was best to make a complete VR version of SUPERHOT from scratch, rather than offer simple support within this year’s release. To do this, though, it would have had to take budget from other projects

“So… all the crazy gifs we have of people flailing around in VR – it’s not just shoddy cash grab of a port in the works,” the blog reads. “It’s the a [sic] completely new game we’re pouring love and years of development effort into.”

SUPERHOT VR will be utilising the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers, bringing a new level of depth to the game’s central mechanic, in which time moves only when the player does. It’s one of several new Touch games Oculus revealed at E3 this week, the others being Wilson’s Heart, Ripcoil, and Killing Floor: Incursion. The device is due to launch in the second half of this year, with Oculus providing more information on it this fall.

SUPERHOT VR will be one of 30 games launching on the kit.
