TPCast Is Releasing A Wireless Adapter For Oculus Rift This Year

by Jamie Feltham • October 18th, 2017

One of our biggest stories of 2016 was the reveal of TPCast’s wireless adapter for the HTC Vive and for good reason; cutting the chord on PC-based headsets could do wonders for immersion in VR. But Oculus Rift owners won’t be missing out on the fun.

TPCast this month announced that it is also working on a wireless adapter for the Oculus Rift, which it intends to release in Q4 of this year. It’s not entirely clear if this is a separate product to the wireless Vive kit or additional functionality for that same device, but we’ve reached out to TPCast to clarify. The company is promising support for 2K video transmission at 90fps with less than 2 milliseconds of motion to photon latency added on top and a five-hour battery life.

The company’s Vive kit works by communicating with a transmitter that users place in their room just like they would a base station. It’s been available in China for some time, but pre-orders for the US and Europe opened last month and are expected to ship soon.

It’s worth noting that TPCast itself is a member of the Vive X VR accelerator, which offers support to startups looking to do more in the VR/AR space.

Since TPCast’s reveal, there’s been something of a race towards wireless PC VR, with several other rival devices also making themselves known. We’ve been impressed with what we’ve tried from TPCast, but a solution from Intel and DisplayLink also blew us away. There’s also the impending release of standalone headsets with inside-out positional tracking that will be entirely self-contained, though won’t boast the power of a PC.

Mid November is the latest word from TPCast on when Vive pre-orders will officially begin……..again.
I just hope they have the mic issue fixed by then.

Oh so this isn’t a vive hardware exclusive. Good job TPCast!

    • polysix

No and we’ve known that for months

Have we now? “TPCast this month announced that it is also working on a wireless adapter for the Oculus Rift, which it intends to release in Q4 of this year.”

  • Regarding the statement: “but pre-orders for the US and Europe opened last month and are expected to ship soon.” AFAIK, all pre-orders through the Microsoft online store were cancelled because TPCast hadn’t delivered the Vive units in time. It’s unclear (now) if/when those units will actually be available in the U.S.

Exactly! Still can’t get one. Microsoft canceled by order.

Well at least they gave $25 to everyone that preordered it. Maybe I will put that towards a surface pro or something.

    • LowRezSkyline

Yup this is exactly what happened to me too (including the 25 dollar gift card). I really wish someone would report on this, is it just delayed? When will it actually ship? Will there be another pre-order somewhere? Etc etc.

So yeah Rift folks I wouldn’t hold your breath, until they manage to ship this thing for the VIVE I’m hard pressed to imagine they get it out the door for the Rift this year. THey’ve been selling the VIVE version in China for 6m and haven’t even done the same with the Rift version yet so who knows when this is going to ship here. Hopefully before the end of the year for both platforms.
